While we haven’t quite made it to Labor Day, the first preliminary contests for the high school Fall sports season are on the horizon. Leading the way will be the Pine Valley/Gowanda Varsity girls soccer team who will face Silver Creek at 10 am on Friday, August 29. This first action of the Fall season will take place on the team’s home field at Pine Valley.

The next day, Saturday, August 30, Gowanda’s Varsity volleyball and football teams will both see their first pre-season action. Volleyball will be at Falconer at 8 am and football will be at Springville for a 5:30 pm game.

None of the Gowanda Fall Varsity sports teams will see any home action in Gowanda until Friday, September 5, when the Gowanda Varsity volleyball team will host North Collins at 6:30 pm.

Jamestown Community College recently announced Dean’s List honors for full-time high school students enrolled part-time in college courses for the 2024/25 Fall and Spring terms. To be eligible, students must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.50 or better while enrolled in at least 12 degree credits.

One recent GCS graduate, Jillian Gernatt, was named to the list for the Fall 2024 term. Gernatt was also the Gowanda Class of 2025 Valedictorian.

CAM P-TECH (Springville) and WNY P-TECH (Dunkirk) 4th quarter Honor Roll lists have been released for the recently completed school year. The P-TECH centers are both part of Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES. Several Gowanda students were included on those lists.

They include:

* Gregory Reid [CAM P-TECH Merit Roll]

* Bentley Turner [CAM P-TECH Merit Roll]

* Seamus Matwijow [WNY P-TECH High Honor Roll]

* Leona Henhawk [WNY P-TECH Merit Roll]

* Max Hansen-Ivett, who is continuing work as a welder at Dunkirk Metal Products

Additionally, Ivett was one of two students to be awarded a Wyatt Butcher Memorial Scholarships. That award is given out in memory of a former WNY P-TECH student.
